Ginger, the rhizome of Zingiber officinale, species of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) is one of the most widely used spices and medicinal plants. Ginger contains volatile oils including terpenoids such as zingiberene and pungent components such as gingerol, shogaol, and zingerone. Among them, the gingerols and shogaols are considered as the major bioactive constituents of fresh and dried ginger, respectively.
In a recent publication in Phytotherapy Research journal the effect of ginger on obesity management was systematically reviewed.
Ginger could modulate obesity through various mechanisms of actions including increasing thermogenesis, increasing lipolysis, suppression of lipogenesis, inhibition of intestinal fat absorption, and controlling appetite.
Evidence from animal models clearly supports the efficacy of ginger extract in weight lowering. The effect of ginger supplementation on healthy obese/overweight subjects was reported just in four studies. As very few clinical studies were conducted on humans, authors couldn’t make definitive conclusions, but there is a trend that is worth exploring further.
