Protective and therapeutic potential of ginger – antitumor and anti-inflammatory

Today, a comprehensive review was published in Phytotherapy Research journal, examining the literature about ginger extract and [6]‐gingerol against tumorigenic and oxidative and inflammatory processes associated with cancer.

The results suggest that ginger derivatives, in the form of an extract or isolated compounds, show significant antiproliferative, antitumor, and anti‐inflammatory activities.

Ginger is a plant originating from China and it belongs to the Zingiberaceae family; it is closely related to turmeric, cardomon and galangal. The underground part of the plant (ginger root) is  commonly used as a spice and is one of the healthiest spices on earth.

In traditional medicine, ginger has often been used to help digestion, reduce nausea or fight the flu and common cold. It comes in many forms: fresh, dried, powdered, or as an extract in the form of an oil or juice.

The main ingredient responsible for the medicinal properties of this plant is [6]‐gingerol with many anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, shown over and over in many scientific articles, now comprehensively reviewed in the above mentioned publication.
