Substantial proportion of older adults is deficient in vitamin B12 and folate

The results of a new study, published in British Journal of Nutrition, showed that one in eight Irish adults are deficient in Vitamin B12 and ne in seven develop a deficiency in folate.

This deficiency was more prominent in smokers, the obese and those who live alone.

According to Dr Eamon Laird, the lead author of the study and a research fellow at Trinity’s Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), this research was the “most comprehensive study of vitamin B12 and folate status in older adults ever conducted in Ireland.”

The study suggests that food fortification with these vitamins should be increased and an effort should be made to make it mandatory.
